Farmed Duck Water Access - Welfare Science

Ducks have strong motivation to access open water for bathing, feeding, and preening. Providing adequate water access in commercial duck farming is a significant welfare challenge.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Water access is a fundamental welfare requirement for farmed ducks that is denied in most commercial systems. The motivation to bathe and immerse the head is so strong that ducks perform the behaviour even in limited water that barely enables it. Without adequate water, ocular and nasal health deteriorates, plumage condition declines, and behavioural frustration is chronic. The welfare solution is straightforward - providing shallow bathing water - but it requires management effort and cost. Consumer demand for higher-welfare duck products creates market incentives for producers to invest in water access systems.
