Captive amphibians including frogs, salamanders, and axolotls have precise environmental requirements that are frequently not met, causing preventable disease and welfare failure.
Amphibian welfare failures in captivity are almost entirely preventable and almost entirely caused by inadequate husbandry rather than complex medical challenges. The permeable skin that makes amphibians ecologically sensitive also makes them welfare-sensitive in captivity: chlorinated water, cleaning product residues, and inadequate temperature cause direct physiological harm. Red leg syndrome — bacterial infection of limbs — is a welfare indicator that usually reflects water quality failure. The difficulty is that amphibians do not display obvious pain behaviours in ways that prompt owners to seek help: they continue sitting in deteriorating conditions until disease is advanced. Regular water testing, appropriate temperature management, and species-specific research before acquisition prevent the majority of captive amphibian welfare failures.
