The majority of the world's cattle live in developing countries where welfare standards and veterinary access are dramatically lower than in Europe. Addressing this global welfare gap is a major challenge.
Global cattle welfare is fundamentally unequal. The welfare protections increasingly applied in European production systems are largely absent across the majority of the world's cattle population. Working cattle in low-income countries face welfare challenges from overwork, inadequate nutrition, untreated disease, and climate stress that EU-housed cattle are protected from. International animal welfare organisations working in these contexts face resource constraints that limit impact. Supporting these organisations, and advocating for international trade frameworks that include welfare standards, are the most available levers for improving welfare for the majority of the world's cattle.
