Bison farming is expanding in North America and Europe, but meeting the behavioural needs of this semi-wild species presents unique challenges distinct from conventional cattle production.
The semi-wild temperament of bison creates welfare challenges that cannot be addressed by cattle-focused protocols alone. Bison require low-stress handling systems, minimal human contact, and sufficient space to express natural ranging behaviour. Confinement in small paddocks, frequent human interaction, and conventional cattle handling procedures all compromise bison welfare significantly.
