Golden eagles are among Britain's most magnificent raptors, but their welfare is threatened by illegal persecution, lead poisoning from deer carcasses, and ongoing habitat pressures.
Golden eagle welfare is inseparable from their conservation status. Illegal killing - still the leading human-caused mortality despite full legal protection - represents both a welfare harm to individuals and a population threat. Lead poisoning causes prolonged neurological suffering before death or is found in sublethal doses impairing cognition and flight. Each individual eagle lost to persecution or poisoning represents a serious welfare failure and removes a critical breeding bird from a small population.
