Rabbit Gut Stasis: Emergency Welfare and Prevention

Gastrointestinal stasis is one of the most common and potentially fatal conditions in pet rabbits. Understanding its causes and early warning signs can save lives.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

GI stasis causes acute abdominal pain and distress in affected rabbits. The build-up of gas causes bloating that rabbits experience as severe discomfort, leading to a characteristic hunched posture and teeth grinding. Without prompt veterinary intervention including fluid therapy, gut motility drugs, and pain relief, affected rabbits can deteriorate rapidly and die. Prevention through correct diet - primarily unlimited hay - is far more effective than emergency treatment.
