Road mortality is the leading documented cause of hedgehog death in the UK. Understanding the scale of the problem and effective mitigation helps target conservation effort most effectively.
Road-killed hedgehogs represent individual animals experiencing sudden traumatic death - a welfare harm to individuals but also a significant population-level impact given the current conservation crisis facing the species. Hedgehogs that are struck but not killed may survive with severe injuries that are rarely treated. The rolling defence behaviour that served hedgehogs well against predators is catastrophically maladaptive against vehicles. Infrastructure solutions including tunnels and speed reduction address the structural cause rather than requiring behavioural change from hedgehogs.
