Canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome is common in senior dogs and causes progressive neurological decline. Recognising and managing CCD improves quality of life in affected animals.
CCD causes progressive welfare deterioration as affected dogs lose orientation, sleep regulation, and social awareness. Dogs that were previously confident may become anxious and disoriented. Nighttime restlessness and howling reflect genuine neurological disturbance rather than behavioural problems. Owners who do not recognise CCD may inadvertently punish confused, anxious dogs for signs that are symptoms of disease. Early recognition, appropriate management, and quality-of-life monitoring are essential welfare responsibilities for owners of senior dogs.
