Egg labelling systems vary widely between countries, leaving consumers uncertain about production standards and the welfare conditions behind each label.
The gap between consumer expectations and labelling reality is a major welfare problem. Consumers paying premium prices for free-range eggs may not realise that hens can be kept indoors for extended periods due to disease restrictions, or that outdoor range quality varies enormously. Mandatory, standardised labelling that covers all egg products - including those used in processed foods - would close this gap and drive welfare improvements through market pressure.
