Dogs can experience post-traumatic stress disorder following severe or repeated trauma, with symptoms including hypervigilance, avoidance, and chronic fear responses.
Canine PTSD represents a significant animal welfare issue that is often underdiagnosed. Many dogs from rescue backgrounds are euthanased due to behaviour problems that are in fact trauma responses. Recognition of PTSD as a genuine clinical condition - not just 'bad behaviour' - changes the treatment approach fundamentally. With appropriate behavioural and pharmacological support, many dogs can recover substantially. Investment in trauma-informed rescue and rehabilitation is both welfare-positive and cost-effective.
