The yellowhammer, once ubiquitous on British farmland, has suffered severe population declines but is now showing signs of recovery where targeted habitat management is applied.
Yellowhammer recovery demonstrates what targeted welfare-positive farming interventions can achieve. Where farmers retain winter stubbles, manage hedgerows sympathetically, and create grassy margins, yellowhammer numbers recover. The welfare of individual birds - their ability to find food in winter without extraordinary effort, to nest successfully without disturbance, to experience normal social and reproductive behaviour - improves alongside population recovery. The challenge now is scaling these measures from showcase farms to the wider landscape.
