Precision fermentation uses microorganisms to produce animal proteins without slaughter, potentially transforming the welfare implications of food production at global scale.
From a pure animal welfare perspective, precision fermentation is one of the most promising technologies being developed. Products functionally identical to animal-derived proteins, produced without any animal suffering, represent a genuine paradigm shift. The transition challenge is primarily economic and regulatory rather than technological. Animal welfare advocates have an interest in supporting policy frameworks that allow precision fermentation products to reach consumers affordably, while ensuring that incumbent animal agriculture industries are not able to create unfair regulatory barriers to adoption.
