Enrichment is essential for pig welfare, but the type, novelty, and accessibility of enrichment determines whether it genuinely improves behaviour and reduces suffering.
Enrichment is not a luxury for pigs - it is a necessity. Pigs deprived of adequate rooting, exploratory, and foraging opportunities develop abnormal repetitive behaviours that are indicators of poor welfare. The gap between minimum legal requirements and genuinely effective enrichment is large: a fixed rubber ring or chain does not provide the stimulation that straw, compost, or browse material does. Enforcement of enrichment requirements and clearer guidance on what constitutes effective enrichment - informed by the research evidence - is needed to drive improvement across commercial pig farming.
