Wild Barn Owl Welfare: Population Health and Nest Box Success

Barn owls have recovered significantly across Britain with the help of nest box schemes, but their welfare remains sensitive to food availability, harsh winters, and road mortality.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Barn owl welfare is tightly linked to vole availability and winter weather. In vole crash years, breeding success collapses and over-winter survival is reduced. Individual owls that cannot find adequate prey face progressive starvation; thin, starving barn owls are frequently brought into wildlife rehabilitation centres in late winter. Nest box provision has transformed breeding success by removing the historical nest site limitation, but food availability remains the binding constraint. Maintaining rough grassland along road verges and field margins supports vole populations, and can also be combined with traffic management to reduce road mortality.
