Teal are Britain's smallest dabbling duck and a common wintering visitor, with breeding populations sensitive to wetland habitat loss and drainage in upland and lowland habitats.
Teal welfare is split between the dramatic decline of breeding birds in degraded upland and lowland wetlands, and the welfare of individual birds shot during the legal shooting season. Breeding welfare improvement requires wetland restoration; drainage reversal and creation of shallow, vegetated wetland habitat restores the conditions that teal need to nest and rear ducklings. The welfare of shot birds depends on shooter competence and appropriate ammunition - wounded birds that are not retrieved can experience prolonged suffering. Both aspects deserve attention from those concerned with duck welfare.
