Dairy goat farming has grown significantly in Britain to meet demand for goat milk products, but welfare standards in intensive systems lag behind those for dairy cattle.
Dairy goat welfare is an under-regulated and under-researched area compared to dairy cattle welfare. The rapid growth of the industry has not been matched by equivalent development of welfare standards or enforcement capacity. Goats in intensive indoor systems often lack the space, enrichment, and social complexity they need. Disbudding without adequate analgesia, indoor confinement without enrichment, and early kid separation create multiple compounding welfare problems. Consumer pressure for welfare-certified goat dairy products is one of the most accessible levers for improvement in an industry with limited regulatory pressure.
