Farmed Cattle Welfare Technology: Precision Monitoring in Practice

Precision livestock technology including accelerometers, bolus sensors, and camera systems is increasingly used to monitor cattle welfare at scale, but implementation and interpretation require care.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Precision cattle welfare technology holds genuine promise for improving individual animal welfare at the scale of commercial farming. Early disease detection, lameness identification before chronic pain develops, and behavioural monitoring can all translate surveillance data into welfare improvements - but only when backed by trained personnel who respond to alerts and interpret data appropriately. Technology that generates alerts that are ignored, or data that is never acted on, provides no welfare benefit. The most effective implementations combine technology with training and clear protocols that define what action each alert should trigger.
