Trichomonosis, already devastating to greenfinch populations, is now affecting chaffinches in Britain, spreading through contaminated garden feeding stations.
Trichomonosis in chaffinches represents an expanding welfare crisis that garden bird feeders may be inadvertently amplifying. The same hygiene principles that apply to greenfinch welfare apply directly to chaffinch welfare: weekly feeder disinfection, regular removal of uneaten food, and periodic site rotation are welfare interventions that millions of garden bird feeders can implement. The scale of garden bird feeding in Britain means that collective improvements in feeder hygiene could meaningfully slow the spread of trichomonosis across the chaffinch population. Public education through wildlife organisations and seed manufacturers is the most efficient route to changing cleaning behaviour at scale.
