Barramundi (Asian sea bass) is a fast-growing fish increasingly farmed in Asia and Australia. Its welfare in aquaculture settings is an emerging area of concern as production scales up.
Barramundi welfare research is less developed than for Atlantic salmon, but key concerns include high stocking densities, cannibalism management (which often involves sorting and size grading), and the transition between freshwater and marine environments. Welfare during slaughter is also poorly regulated in most producing countries. As demand grows, there is opportunity to build welfare standards into certification schemes from the outset.
