Horse Cushings Disease and Quality of Life

Pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID), commonly called Equine Cushings Disease, is the most common endocrine disorder of older horses and significantly affects their welfare if unmanaged.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

PPID has a major welfare impact because of its association with laminitis - one of the most painful conditions horses experience. Many horses with undiagnosed PPID suffer repeated laminitic episodes before the underlying cause is identified. The disease is progressive and currently incurable, but medical management with pergolide dramatically improves quality of life. Regular screening of horses over 15 years old with an ACTH blood test allows early intervention.
