Animal transport causes significant welfare harm, and recent research has advanced understanding of optimal transport conditions, monitoring technologies, and welfare indicators during transit.
Transport welfare research has improved in recent decades but implementation of findings lags significantly. Key welfare harms include heat stress, dehydration, injury from falls during loading and unloading, social stress from mixing unfamiliar animals, and motion sickness. Monitoring technologies offer potential to enforce standards more effectively and provide real-time alerts when conditions deteriorate. Slaughter closer to the point of production would eliminate many transport welfare problems but requires significant infrastructure investment.
