Replacing fast-growing broiler breeds with slower-growing alternatives is one of the highest-impact welfare interventions available to the poultry industry. Tracking progress on breed reform commitments is critical.
Broiler breed reform is arguably the single most impactful welfare intervention available in commercial poultry. Modern fast-growing breeds are so physiologically compromised that they cannot walk properly, suffer from chronic pain, and have high mortality from heart failure. Slower-growing breeds retain more natural behaviors, have better leg health, and show lower stress indicators. Corporate commitments to transition have been made but compliance is lagging - strong consumer and shareholder pressure is needed to accelerate action.
