Broiler parent birds - used to breed fast-growing commercial chickens - are chronically hungry due to severe feed restriction to prevent the obesity and health problems of their offspring's genetics.
Broiler parent welfare represents a deliberately inflicted welfare compromise. The industry recognizes that parent birds experience chronic hunger but continues the practice because the alternative - allowing free feeding - causes severe obesity and health problems in birds bred for maximum growth. This is a welfare problem created by selective breeding and can only be fully resolved through breed reform. Partial solutions include enrichment to reduce hunger-related frustration and meal timing to reduce competition at feeders, but chronic hunger cannot be eliminated without changing the breed.
