Wild Barn Owl Conservation Welfare

Barn owls are one of Britain's most beloved birds of prey, but their welfare is threatened by road mortality, rodenticide poisoning, and cold wet winters that reduce prey availability.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Barn owl welfare faces both acute and chronic threats. Road mortality causes instantaneous death but in aggregate removes thousands of birds annually from the population. SGAR poisoning causes sub-lethal health effects including impaired hunting performance and internal bleeding that may eventually be fatal. Cold winters causing prey inaccessibility leads to starvation - barn owls have low fat reserves and can die within days of prey unavailability. Nest box provision is the most direct positive welfare intervention available, providing safe nesting sites that increase breeding success.
