Polecats were once restricted to Wales following near-extinction in England, but have expanded their range significantly in recent decades. Understanding polecat welfare and threats informs conservation priorities.
Polecat welfare is currently most threatened by secondary poisoning from rodenticides and road mortality. As polecats colonize new areas, they encounter poorly marked roads in areas with previously no polecat presence. SGAR poisoning occurs through consumption of poisoned rodents and causes internal bleeding that may be sub-lethal or fatal. The range expansion is a conservation success attributable to legal protection and reduced game keeper persecution. Maintaining this success requires addressing the emerging threat of rodenticide poisoning as polecats colonize agricultural landscapes.
