Aquaculture Oxygen Management Welfare

Dissolved oxygen is the most critical water quality parameter for fish welfare in aquaculture. Understanding oxygen management helps improve welfare in intensive production systems.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Oxygen management is fundamental to fish welfare in aquaculture. Hypoxia - low dissolved oxygen - causes behavioral changes including surface crowding, increased gill ventilation, and reduced activity. Chronic mild hypoxia suppresses immune function, reduces growth, and causes chronic stress. Acute hypoxia during equipment failures or algal crashes causes panic and mass mortality through suffocation. Automated oxygen monitoring with alarm systems and redundant aeration are basic welfare provisions that prevent the most severe acute events. In open net pen systems, oxygen management is less controllable but site selection and stocking density management are critical.
