Disbudding - removing horn buds from calves - is one of the most commonly performed painful procedures in cattle. Improving pain management during and after disbudding is a key welfare priority.
Disbudding pain management has improved as evidence has accumulated showing the inadequacy of local anaesthetic alone. Local anaesthetic blocks pain during the procedure but wears off within 1-2 hours, leaving calves experiencing significant post-procedure pain. NSAIDs provide extended anti-inflammatory analgesia but require prescription and planning. Combination protocols providing both show best welfare outcomes. The long-term solution is polled genetics - breeding cattle without horn buds eliminates the need for the procedure entirely. Several breeds now have high-frequency polled genetics available.
