Chimpanzees who have experienced laboratory or entertainment exploitation often carry lasting psychological effects. Stereotypic behaviors, social dysfunction, and fear responses may persist for years after rescue. High-quality sanctuary environments provide naturalistic spaces, multi-individual social groups, and rich enrichment programs. The long-term commitment required for chimpanzee care is substantial but morally essential given the depth of their cognitive and emotional lives.
