Grey herons are widespread waterway predators whose welfare is affected by food availability, human persecution, and cold winters. Their relationship with fisheries creates ongoing welfare and management challenges.
Grey heron welfare is most significantly threatened by cold winter conditions that prevent foraging, and by illegal persecution near fishing ponds. Herons that cannot access food for extended cold periods starve rapidly. Persecution at fisheries - including illegal shooting, trapping, and poisoning - causes direct welfare harm and is legally unjustified as non-lethal deterrence is effective. Young herons dispersing from colonies face high mortality in their first winter as inexperienced hunters. Garden pond owners can protect fish with netting while allowing herons to continue using other water sources without persecution.
