Animal-assisted therapy and activities have demonstrated welfare benefits for humans, but the welfare of the animals themselves must be carefully monitored to ensure interactions are positive for all involved.
The welfare of animals in therapeutic contexts deserves the same attention as their human partners. A dog subjected to intensive interaction schedules without adequate rest, play, and recovery time can suffer despite performing a valued service. Responsible AAI programs monitor animal stress continuously, limit session duration, and provide the animal with genuine choice in engagement. When animal welfare is prioritized, both animal and human participants benefit from richer, more genuine interactions.
