Pre-slaughter stunning in poultry aims to render birds unconscious before killing, but method choice significantly affects welfare outcomes for billions of birds annually.
Poultry slaughter welfare is a massive-scale issue given the numbers involved. Conventional water-bath stunning systems have well-documented welfare problems including live shackling of conscious birds and inconsistent stunning from poor electrical contact. Controlled atmosphere systems eliminate live shackling but introduce aversion during induction in CO2-based systems. The most welfare-positive approach - multi-phase low-oxygen systems - remains costly. Improvements in monitoring and enforcement of stunning effectiveness would benefit billions of animals.
