Chimpanzees are highly social, cognitively complex primates with sophisticated social needs that create significant challenges for zoo welfare management.
Providing adequate social environments for chimpanzees in zoos is genuinely challenging. Small groups limit social choice and may force animals into stressful proximity with incompatible individuals. Introducing new animals carries injury risk. Even in well-managed groups, subordinate individuals may have limited ability to avoid dominant animals in enclosed spaces. Best-practice welfare requires large, complex enclosures with separation possibilities, carefully managed group compositions, rich cognitive enrichment, and ongoing welfare assessment using validated behavioural measures.
