Laboratory rabbits have complex social and physical needs that are frequently inadequately met in research settings, creating significant welfare challenges.
Laboratory rabbits frequently live in conditions that fail to meet their psychological and physical needs. Social isolation, insufficient space and barren environments cause chronic stress detectable through physiological and behavioural measures. The welfare case for social housing, enrichment and appropriate space is strong. The 3Rs principle of Refinement requires that laboratory rabbit housing be continuously improved based on emerging welfare science. Individual bonding between pairs of rabbits is achievable and dramatically improves welfare outcomes.
