Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) was historically fatal but new antiviral treatments have transformed the welfare outlook for affected cats.
FIP causes serious suffering including lethargy, fever, fluid accumulation causing respiratory distress and abdominal pain, and neurological signs. Before effective antivirals, affected cats faced euthanasia or prolonged palliative care without hope of recovery. The availability of effective antiviral treatment has transformed the welfare picture - a formerly invariably fatal condition now has good prognosis with treatment. Access barriers including cost and availability of licensed treatments represent ongoing welfare inequity that veterinary and regulatory bodies are working to address.
