Ducks are waterfowl with strong motivation to access open water for bathing, swimming and bill-dipping, making water access a fundamental welfare requirement.
Denying water access to ducks represents a fundamental welfare failure given their strong waterfowl motivation for aquatic behaviour. Ducks without bathing water cannot maintain feather waterproofing, develop eye and nasal infections, and cannot perform natural comfort behaviours including preening. The welfare evidence base clearly supports open water provision as a requirement, not an enhancement. Consumer preference for higher welfare duck products, combined with certification schemes requiring water access, can drive industry adoption of this essential welfare standard.
