Dog Ear Disease: Otitis Externa Welfare Management

Otitis externa is one of the most common and painful conditions in dogs, requiring accurate diagnosis and treatment to prevent chronic welfare compromise.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Otitis externa causes significant pain and discomfort. The itch-scratch cycle in ear disease is distressing and head shaking can cause haematomas - blood accumulations in the ear flap - adding further pain. Chronic untreated otitis progresses to permanent damage requiring surgical intervention. Welfare-centred management requires accurate diagnosis including cytology, treatment of underlying causes particularly allergies, and appropriate antimicrobial use to prevent resistance. Breed selection for dogs with more open ear canal anatomy would prevent much primary disease.
