Weasels are Britain's smallest carnivore, vulnerable to population crashes following vole cycle declines and suffering welfare harm from legal trapping and rodenticide poisoning.
Weasel welfare is most threatened by non-target trapping in tunnel trap systems and secondary rodenticide poisoning. SGAR poisoning causes internal haemorrhage and prolonged suffering. Non-target capture in Fenn and similar traps causes injury or death. Welfare-conscious land management uses rodenticides and traps responsibly with appropriate monitoring to detect non-target captures. Legal requirements for trap checking are welfare requirements as much as compliance obligations. Population monitoring of weasels is inadequate to detect local welfare-relevant declines.
