Wild Goldfinch and Siskin: Garden Feeding Welfare

Goldfinches and siskins are small finches that respond strongly to garden feeding, particularly sunflower hearts and nyjer seed. Understanding their needs and potential risks maximises welfare benefit from supplementary feeding.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Garden supplementary feeding provides real welfare benefit to goldfinches and siskins during winter food scarcity, but poorly managed feeding can harm the very birds it intends to help. Trichomonosis has caused significant goldfinch mortality in garden feeding contexts since the mid-2000s, spreading from greenfinches to multiple finch species. The disease is transmitted directly at shared feeders through contaminated saliva. The mitigation is rigorous feeder hygiene: removing and cleaning feeders weekly with 10% bleach solution, allowing complete drying before refilling, and removing uneaten seed before it becomes mouldy. Collisions with windows are another significant welfare harm at garden feeding stations: positioning feeders very close to windows (within 1 metre, so birds cannot accelerate to damaging speeds) or using window strike prevention films significantly reduces collision mortality.
