Effective pain management in cattle has advanced significantly, yet remains inconsistently applied in practice. NSAIDs, local anaesthesia, and opioids all have roles, and evidence increasingly supports multimodal analgesia for the most painful procedures.
Pain management for cattle has historically lagged far behind companion animal medicine, with many painful procedures performed without analgesia due to cost, convenience, or habit. The scientific evidence for cattle pain capacity is unambiguous, and the tools for effective management are increasingly accessible. The gap between available knowledge and farm practice represents preventable suffering on a large scale. Veterinary leadership in recommending and demonstrating analgesic protocols is the most effective lever for change at farm level.
