Dairy and meat goats face specific welfare challenges related to their highly active, curious, and social nature. Understanding goat behaviour and needs is essential for providing adequate welfare in commercial production systems.
Goat welfare has received less research and regulatory attention than cattle or pig welfare, yet commercial dairy and meat goat systems create significant welfare challenges. The combination of high intelligence, social needs, and physical activity requirements makes barren, restrictive housing particularly inappropriate for goats. Disbudding without analgesia causes unnecessary acute pain. Disease burden in intensive goat systems can be high. Welfare standards for goats need to catch up with those for other farmed species.
