The noctule is one of Britain's largest bat species, roosting primarily in trees and foraging high above the canopy. Tree loss, building renovation, and wind turbines pose welfare and conservation challenges for this woodland bat.
Noctule bats face specific welfare threats from habitat management that removes their tree-cavity roosting requirements. Colony disturbance or destruction causes acute stress and orphaning of dependent young. Wind turbine mortality is a growing concern as bats collide with rotor blades, suffering fatal barotrauma. Mitigation measures including turbine curtailment during high-bat-activity periods reduce mortality but are not universally implemented. Legal protection of all bat roosts provides some safeguard but enforcement requires active monitoring.
