Weaning separates beef calves from their mothers, causing acute behavioural and physiological stress in both animals. Management of weaning timing, method, and environment can significantly reduce welfare costs.
Weaning is one of the most acutely stressful events in beef calf production. The vocalisation of distressed calves and cows is audible evidence of the acute suffering the procedure causes. The welfare costs of weaning are substantially reducible through management approach - fence-line weaning and two-stage methods both demonstrate that the worst acute distress can be avoided at minimal cost. Early weaning for management convenience rather than animal welfare reasons represents an unnecessary welfare cost that should be minimised.
