Wild Deer Management and Population Welfare

Deer population management through culling is necessary in the UK to prevent overgrazing of woodland and agricultural damage, and improves individual deer welfare by preventing the suffering of starvation and disease that accompanies overpopulation.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Deer population management presents a welfare trade-off: managed populations in which individual animals have adequate food and habitat experience better welfare than unmanaged populations experiencing periodic starvation events. Culling causes individual death and its welfare cost is minimised by high standards of marksmanship and immediate death. The alternative - population overshoot and crash with widespread starvation mortality - causes far greater aggregate suffering. Responsible deer management is therefore both ecologically and welfare justified when conducted to high standards.
