Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the most costly disease of beef and dairy cattle, causing significant suffering, mortality, and long-term production losses. Prevention through management, vaccination, and early treatment is more effective than reactive treatment.
BRD causes acute and chronic respiratory suffering that substantially reduces quality of life for affected cattle. Laboured breathing, fever, and the malaise of systemic infection affect every daily activity. The chronic lung damage in recovered animals means welfare costs persist beyond the acute illness. The high prevalence of BRD in beef systems reflects management conditions that create excessive physiological stress. Reducing stress through better transport management, nutrition, and housing quality prevents the immunosuppression that enables disease.
