Fly burden is a significant but often overlooked welfare problem in cattle. Flies cause stress, blood loss, disease transmission, and behavioural disruption that impairs feeding and social behaviour.
Fly burden represents a significant chronic welfare insult that is often underappreciated by producers because the individual suffering of each fly bite is small. Accumulated across thousands of interactions per day over weeks, the welfare cost is substantial - reduced grazing, constant defensive behaviour, and blood loss all impair cattle welfare and productivity. Effective fly control is both a welfare and an economic investment. Integrated approaches combining chemical, biological, and environmental management reduce fly burden more sustainably than chemical-only approaches.
