Anxiety disorders in companion animals cause significant chronic suffering. Pharmacological support, often in combination with behaviour modification, can transform quality of life for severely affected animals.
Anxiety disorders cause persistent, intense suffering that profoundly reduces quality of life for affected animals. The suffering of a dog with severe separation anxiety - destroyed possessions, self-injury, and hours of sustained distress - is genuine and avoidable with appropriate treatment. The historic reluctance to use pharmacological support for animal anxiety reflects anthropomorphic discomfort with medication rather than evidence. Evidence-based pharmacological support, properly supervised and combined with behaviour modification, dramatically improves welfare for many chronically anxious animals.
