Blackcaps and other migratory warblers face welfare challenges during spring and autumn migration, including exhaustion on crossing barriers, temporary fuel stops in gardens, and exposure to harsh conditions during extended journeys.
Migrant warbler welfare is acutely relevant during the energetically demanding migration periods. Birds crossing the Sahara and other barriers must carry sufficient fuel reserves - those that arrive depleted face starvation and exhaustion. Garden stops during migration provide critical refuelling opportunities. Collision with lit buildings during night migration causes acute traumatic mortality at migration peaks. Providing berrying plants in gardens, reducing artificial light during migration periods, and applying window collision deterrents all provide welfare benefits for individual migrant birds.
