Navicular disease (palmar foot pain) is a common cause of chronic forelimb lameness in horses. Modern understanding has advanced beyond the traditional anatomical concept, improving diagnosis and welfare management.
Navicular syndrome causes chronic pain that significantly impairs quality of life if inadequately managed. Horses working with chronic foot pain cannot perform comfortably, may show compensatory movement patterns that create secondary musculoskeletal problems, and experience the persistent discomfort of every step. Many horses are worked through early signs of palmar foot pain - reluctance, stumbling, shortened stride - because these signs are attributed to laziness or training issues rather than pain. Early diagnosis using MRI, appropriate farriery, and pharmacological support where needed can maintain quality of life and athletic function for many affected horses. The welfare obligation is prompt investigation of any lameness and commitment to long-term management rather than symptom suppression.
