Otitis externa is one of the most common conditions presenting to veterinary practices, causing chronic ear pain that significantly impairs quality of life for affected dogs. Prevention and early management are key to welfare improvement.
Chronic otitis causes ongoing ear pain that is often underestimated by owners who normalise head shaking and ear rubbing as 'normal' for their breed. Dogs with untreated or poorly managed otitis live with persistent discomfort that affects sleep, play, and normal social interaction. The progression from acute to chronic otitis is driven by inadequate treatment of the underlying cause - repeated courses of topical antibiotics without addressing atopy or conformation factors create antibiotic-resistant infections that are increasingly difficult to treat. The welfare obligation in otitis management is to investigate and address the underlying cause rather than repeatedly treating episodes without resolution, and to provide adequate pain management throughout treatment.
