Dog Hot Spots and Dermatitis Welfare

Acute moist dermatitis (hot spots) causes intense localised skin pain and itching in dogs. Understanding causes, prevention, and rapid treatment is essential for welfare in predisposed breeds.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Hot spots cause rapid onset, intense suffering from the combination of infection, inflammation, and self-trauma. Dogs with active hot spots are clearly uncomfortable - they cannot leave the lesion alone, and the cycle of self-trauma making the lesion worse is driven by pain and itch that the dog cannot stop responding to. The welfare urgency is high - delay of even 24 hours can allow a small irritation to become a large, severely infected lesion requiring more aggressive treatment. Elizabethan collars, while necessary, prevent dogs from normal behaviour including eating comfortably and self-grooming, adding to the welfare burden during healing. Softer collar alternatives can reduce this secondary welfare cost.
